High school softball: Haughton hangs tough before falling to Natchitoches Central in first round

The Haughton Lady Bucs fell to the Natchitoches Central Lady Chiefs 3-0 in a non-select Division I first-round playoff game Friday in Natchitoches.

The No. 16 seed Lady Bucs closed their season 18-16. The No. 16 seed Lady Chiefs improved to 14-14.

Both teams got outstanding pitching performances. Haughton’s Dixie Williams gave up just three hits. She struck out two and walked two. Only one of of the Lady Chiefs’ runs were earned.

Natchitoches Central’s Sydney Terrell gave up five hits. She struck out six and walked only one.

The Lady Chiefs broke a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the fourth.

They scored their final two in the sixth. Morgan Robinson led off with a home run. A single by Terrell scored the second run.

Haughton’s Clara Shaffer went 2-for-3. Williams had a double. Brianna Benecke and Saylor White had hits.

No. 21 seed Parkway (14-9) travels to Gonzales to play No. 12 East Ascension (17-12) in another non-select Division I game Saturday at noon.

No. 6 seed Airline received a first-round bye. The Lady Vikings will host No. 11 West Ouachita (20-14) Tuesday at 6 in the second round. The Lady Chiefs defeated No. 22 Central Lafourche in the first round.

No. 2 seed Benton also received a bye. The Lady Tigers will host the winner of Saturday’s game between No. 15 Destrehan (20-12)  and No. 18 Mandeville (18-7). 

Plain Dealing (10-13-1), the No. 17 seed, will travel to Olla to face No. 1 LaSalle (33-3) in a non-select Division IV second-round game Tuesday at 4:30.
