High school track and field: Plain Dealing’s Newton sweeps shot put, discus in Region I-1A meet

Plain Dealing’s Brianna Newton swept the shot put and discus in the Region I-1A meet Tuesday at Lakeside.

Newton threw 41 feet, 3.75 inches in the shot put, almost seven feet farther than runner-up Mattie Parham of LaSalle. 

Newton threw 108-4 in the discus. Haynesville’s Arieanna Penegar was second with a 102-9.5.

Newton will be Plain Dealing’s lone representative in the Class 1A state meet Thursday, May 8, in Baton Rouge.
