Louisiana Downs was filled with wagging tails, colorful beads and carnival cheer Sunday, Feb. 8, as Krewe of Barkus & Meoux hosted its annual Mardi Gras parade celebrating pets and their people.
Dressed in vibrant purple, green and gold, dogs and cats strutted alongside their owners in themed costumes ranging from playful “Purrfect Pairs” designs to classic Mardi Gras looks. Spectators lined the parade route, cheering as costumed pets proudly showed off their flair and personality.
The parade featured both a pet costume contest and a float contest, drawing creative entries that highlighted the effort and imagination of participants. From elaborate handmade costumes to lighthearted crowd favorites, each entry added to the festive atmosphere that has become a hallmark of the event.
Local vendors were set up on site, offering food, merchandise and pet-related items. With weather concerns anticipated, vendors were accommodated indoors, allowing the celebration to continue comfortably and uninterrupted. Music and pet-friendly activities kept families and animal lovers engaged throughout the day.
While the parade delivered plenty of fun and laughter, its mission went beyond entertainment. The event raised awareness and support for animal welfare organizations in the community, reinforcing Krewe of Barkus & Meoux’s commitment to helping animals in need.
Now a familiar and much-anticipated Mardi Gras tradition, the parade once again showcased the strong bond between pets and their owners while bringing the community together in celebration.
As the final costumed pets crossed the parade route, Louisiana Downs echoed with applause — a fitting close to a Mardi Gras event where four-legged participants truly stole the show.
