The Benton Tigers edged defending non-select Division III state champion Sterlington 4-3 Monday at Sterlington.
Elsewhere, Parkway opened District 1-5A play with a 10-0 loss to Captain Shreve at Captain Shreve..
At Sterlington, Benton trailed 3-0 through three innings. The Tigers tied it with three in the top of the fourth then scored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth.
Cole Snell doubled with one out in the fifth and Hayden Millen brought him home with a single.
Eight Tigers combined for nine hits. Millen went 2-for-4.
Kannon Greer had two-RBI single with two outs in the fourth. Harrison Miller, Slade Stephens and Jake Hutchison had singles. Rydon McCormack had a sacrifice bunt.
Stephens pitched a three-hitter. He struck out eight and walked two.
Benton (13-2-2) returns to District 1-5A play Thursday against Parkway at Benton at 6.
At Captain Shreve, Captain Shreve’s Denton Hester limited the Panthers to three hits in the five-inning game. He struck out eight and walked none.
Parkway’s Peyton Rayner had a triple.
The Panthers (4-8, 0-1) and Gators (12-4, 2-0) are scheduled to complete the series Tuesday at Parkway at 6.
