High school softball: Benton, Airline close district play with victories

The Benton Lady Tigers and Airline Lady Vikings won District 1-5A games Wednesday.

Benton defeated Captain Shreve 13-4 at Captain Shreve and Airline defeated Byrd 14-3 at Byrd. Both games were makeups of games postponed because of inclement weather.

At Captain Shreve, Bayleigh Moniz went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI. Emma Holmes, Olivia Livers, Makaylan Lawrence and Madison Lodatto had two hits apiece. Lainey Lafitte had a double.

Benton (14-13, 7-1) finished second in the district, one game behind Natchitoches Central, a year after winning the title. The Lady Tigers entered the game at No. 17 in the non-select power rankings. The No. 7-16 seeds in the final rankings host first-round playoff games.

Benton visits Florien Thursday at 5 then closes the regular season Friday at North DeSoto, per its schedule on the LHSAA website. Captain Shreve dropped to 12-16 and 2-6.

At Byrd, Taylor Smith pitched a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts and two walks in the six-inning game.

Madalynn Shortridge went 2-for-3. Tatianna Frese went 2-for-3. Ainsley Jones went 2-for-4 with two RBI. 

Mauriana Holcomb hit a three-run home run to give Airline the 14-3 lead in the sixth inning. Ainsley Hollis had three RBI.

Airline improved to 16-10 overall and 5-3 in district. The Lady Vikings and Haughton finished tied for third.

Airline entered the game No. 13 in the non-select Division I power rankings. The Lady Vikings visit Calvary Baptist Thursday at 5:30 then close the regular season Monday against Glenbrook at home at 5.
