Welcome back to the “Spotlight.” Whereas Memorial Day has come and gone it is never too late and always a great time to say “Thank You” to our Veterans for their many sacrifices for the cause of Freedom. There were many memorial celebrations throughout our area all with the sole intention of making sure that we continue to honor and remember those who has answered the call and given their all in the line of Military Service.

On Wednesday of last week our local Law Enforcement Community opened their doors and their hearts to a brave 12 year old that is in a battle against cancer. The young man’s name is Devarjae Daniels and his dream has always been to be a Policeman and protect his community. Devarjae or “D.J.” has set out to break the Guinness world record for recognition from Police Depts. across the nation. His goal is to visit and be recognized by 1000 Depts. and he is presently well over 800 visits.

On last week he came to Bossier City and the Bossier City Police Dept. the Bossier City Marshal’s Office and the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office gave him a day to remember. All three agencies welcomed him and gave him T-Shirts or Badges and other recognition but the Sheriff’s Dept. gave him a full uniform with I.D. and literally made him a “Deputy for the Day.” D.J. has a great attitude is outgoing and greets everyone with a great big D.J. hug. D.J.’s prognosis is diagnosed as terminal but his energy and spirit is joyful and contagious and we will continue to pray for him.

The Bossier City Police Dept. has five Dept. members that are “moving on up.” Police Chief Daniel Haugen and Mayor Chandler joined a full house of family and well wishers for the Promotional ceremony. The promoted members are: Captain  Joe Thomerson – Lieutenant Doug Fuller  – Sgt. George Fanning  Sgt. Carl Liddell and Sgt. Steve Wood. We Thank these Officers for their service to our City and Congratulations to each of them.

On June 8th and 9th the Bossier City Civic Center will Welcome the Classic Arms Gun Show. The show will be here for that weekend and we invite all interested citizens to come out to buy or just check it out.

Construction at City Hall is moving along well and you will now encounter a full body scanner when you enter the building. This is part of the renovation that is taking place to keep us safe.

Last week Barksdale Air Force Base had it’s Change of Responsibility Ceremony. There were high ranking Generals, Barksdale and Community Representatives and Mayor Tommy Chandler in attendance.

Bossier Parks and Recreation wants to remind everyone that Summer is here and that our Swimming Pools are open. The adult softball league is underway and there are some really good games going on in league play. To our Basketball fans get ready for the NBA Finals..

The Boston Celtics have punched their tickets and by the time you read this, I’m sure that the Dallas Mavericks will be their opponents. The Bossier City Fire Dept. is getting ready to hire the next class of Fire Recruits they are well into the process. To ALL of our children that are out for the Summer, the Spotlight is encouraging you to have a productive, fun and safe summer. To Citizens that wish to get a bit more engaged in what’s happening in Bossier City we invite you to attend City Council meeting on Tuesday June 4th at 3:00.
