BPCC Theatre and The Cavalier Players will present the psychological thriller “Gaslight” Aug. 20-23 at the Stephen W. Slaughter Theatre on Bossier Parish Community College’s Bossier Campus, 6220 East Texas St.

Adapted by Steven Dietz in 2023 from Patrick Hamilton’s 1938 play, “Gaslight” explores psychological manipulation, deception and the unsettling question of whether reality can be trusted. Hamilton’s original work also inspired the acclaimed 1944 film starring Ingrid Bergman and gave rise to the modern term “gaslighting.”

Set in Victorian London, the story follows Bella and Jack Manningham, a married couple whose seemingly ordinary life becomes increasingly disturbing. Mysterious footsteps sound from the attic. The gaslights flicker without explanation. Objects disappear and reappear. As Bella begins to question her own memory and perception, the arrival of a determined police sergeant raises new questions about what is really happening inside the Manningham home.

With elements of mystery, film noir and psychological suspense, “Gaslight” examines the devastating effects of emotional abuse and manipulation while keeping audiences guessing about what — and whom — they can believe.

“The fear of insanity and the threat of potential harm in this play make it a haunting experience for mature audiences,” said Dr. Ray Scott Crawford, BPCC Performing Arts program director.

The production is directed by BPCC staff member Lari Renee Leber.

“A simple love story turned sour by the twist of a mind. How much faith is too much in the hands of your love?” Leber said. “This story explores our worst fear — love that isn’t real and how it can change the shape of our whole reality.”

The cast features Mystery Almond as Bella, Daniel Johnson as Jack and Andy Thrasher as Sergeant Rough. Zoe Getter portrays Elizabeth, Ellen Douglas portrays Nancy, and Maria Hernandez and Keith Toso appear as police officers.

The production team includes Rona Leber, costume design; David White, set and lighting design; and Davi Cole, properties design. Ellen Douglas serves as stage manager, with Maria Hernandez and Faith Robinson serving as assistant stage managers.
