Louisiana Tech sophomore Elena Heng, a former Airline star, has been named the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year.

The awards are voted on by the league’s 12 head coaches.

Heng started all 49 games in center field for the Bulldogs and finished with a flawless fielding percentage, 133 putouts and seven assists on 140 total chances.

She was one of just four CUSA players to finish with a 1.000 fielding percentage and the only one with more than 100 chances. Heng tallied a pair of assists against Eastern Illinois on Feb. 13.

Heng is also second on the team in batting with a .342 average.

Outfielder Allie Furr, a second-team selection, leads the Bulldogs with a .373 average.

Infielder Bradi Galloway was Tech’s only first-team selection. She has a .307 average with 11 home runs and 10 doubles.

Louisiana Tech (29-23) finished seventh in the regular-season standings at 15-12. Jacksonville State (42-13, 24-3) won the conference.

The Bulldogs face FIU (34-17) in the first round of the CUSA Tournament Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. in Newark, Del.
