High school baseball: Benton, Airline notch 1-5A victories

The Benton Tigers and Airline Vikings won District 1-5A games Thursday.

Benton defeated Parkway 13-3 at Benton, and Airline defeated Captain Shreve 6-3 at Captain Shreve.

In other District 1-5A games, Evangel Christian defeated Byrd 7-1, and Natchitoches Central defeated Huntington by forfeit.

Benton (14-2-2, 3-0) is the only team without a district loss.

Natchitoches Central (14-5, 4-1), Airline (8-9, 3-1) and Captain Shreve (13-5, 3-1) are one game back in the loss column. They are followed by Evangel (11-5, 3-2), Haughton (11-7, 2-2), Parkway (5-10, 0-3) and Byrd (3-12, 0-4).

In non-district games, Haughton fell to Calvary Baptist 3-2 at Calvary and Providence Classical Academy lost to Ebarb 10-3 at Ebarb.

At Benton, Parkway led 3-0 through two innings. The Tigers took the lead for good with four in the bottom of the third.

Benton added five in the fourth and ended the game with four in the fifth.

Benton’s Harrison Miller went 4-for-4 with with four RBI. Kannon Greer went 2-for-2.

Cole Snell went 2-for-4 with three RBI. Brody Turnipseed had two RBI.

Bryson Gates took the mound in the top of the third with runners at first and second and no outs. He struck out the next two batters and induced a fly ball to end the threat.

Gates retired six of the next seven Panthers. One reached on an error.  He finished with four strikeouts.

Parkway’s Peyton Rayner went 2-for-2 Jax Thomson went 2-for-3. Dallas Loche had a double.

Benton and Parkway are scheduled to complete the two-game series Saturday at 1 at Parkway.

At Captain Shreve, Airline led 3-0 through four innings. The Gators tied it with three in the fifth.

The Vikings answered with three in the sixth. 

Drew Robinson drew a walk with one out in the sixth. Jack Henry Smith and Brock Jordan had back-to-back singles. Jordan’s hit scored Robinson and Smith.

Jordan advanced to second on a passed ball and Leo Heng walked. Both moved up a base on another passed ball. An intentional walk loaded the bases with two outs. Bo Carter then drew a walk, scoring Jordan.

Smith went 3-for-4. Carter went 2-for-3 with a double. 

Heng went four innings for the win. He allowed four hits, struck out five and walked five. Robinson earned the save. He allowed one hit, struck out two and walked none.

Airline and Shreve are scheduled to complete the two-game series Saturday at 1 at Airline.

At Calvary, Haughton trailed 3-0 through five. Maddox Williams’ two-run home run in the sixth got the Bucs within one. Haughton put runners at first and second with one out in the seventh but left them stranded.

CT Woodard went 2-for-3. Brody Beach pitched three scoreless innings in relief.

Haughton and Calvary (12-8) meet again Friday at 5 at Haughton.

At Ebarb, Benton Axton went 2-for-3. Tanner Stinson and Leo Cuevas combined for 10 strikeouts.

PCA (3-8) visits Weston Tuesday at 5.
