High school boys golf: Benton two strokes off lead after first round of Division I state tournament

The Benton Tigers are tied for third, two strokes off the lead, after Tuesday’s first round of the Ochsner LHSAA Boys’ Division I State Tournament in Lafayette.

Benton shot a 3-over-par 291 on The Wetlands course. Defending champion Byrd and St. Paul are tied for first at 1 over. Catholic-Baton Rouge is tied with Benton.

Cason Toms led the Tigers with a 2-under 70. He is tied for fifth in the medalist competition with Byrd’s Grant Reagan. Brother Martin’s Kyle Traub leads at 65.

St. Paul’s Bennett LaNasa, Jesuit’s Duke Nitcher and Northshore’s Preston Paulo are tied for second at 69.

Benton’s Miller Davis is among six players tied for seventh at 71. His teammate Kade Bryant and Airline’s Madden Sawrie are among seven players tied for 13th at 72.

Benton’s Colton Halverson shot a 78 and Austin Race a 79. 

The tournament concludes with 18 holes Wednesday.
