High school softball: Airline, Haughton post 1-5A victories; Plain Dealing wins

The Airline Lady Vikings and Haughton Lady Bucs won District 1-5A games Thursday.

Airline defeated Parkway 6-1 at Airline, and Haughton rolled past Byrd 17-2 at Byrd.

In a battle for the 1-5A lead, Benton fell to Natchitoches Central 5-1 at Benton.

In non-district games, Plain Dealing swept a home doubleheader against Homer 8-0 and 10-8.

At Airline, Haley Whiteside went 3-for-4 with a home run, double and three RBI. Her three-run home run with two outs in the fourth gave the Lady Vikings the 6-1 lead.

Pitcher Taylor Smith went 2-for-3 with a double. Abby Hutson went 2-for-3. Madalynn Shortridge went 2-for-4.

Smith pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts and seven walks.

Parkway’s Izzy Rodriguez and Maci Paul both drew two walks.

Airline improved to 8-5 overall and 1-1 in district. Parkway dropped to 8-8 and 0-3.

At Byrd, Haughton had 13 hits in the four-inning game. The Lady Bucs hit four home runs.

Skylar Hogan hit two and finished with six RBI. Her three-run homer gave the Lady Bucs the 17-2 lead in the fourth.

Clara Shaffer went 2-for-3 with a home run and five RBI. Charlee Prothro went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI. 

Avery Hedrick went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Reese Mayfield went 2-for-3. Avery Smith and Ella Turner had one double each. Kallie Sanderlin got the win.

Haughton (9-9, 4-1) plays Rosepine Friday at 7 in the Sulphur tournament. Byrd dropped to  1-9 and 1-2.

At Benton, Natchitoches Central broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the fourth. The Lady Chiefs added one in the fifth and two in the seventh. Benton scored its run in the bottom of the seventh.

Natchitoches Central’s Ehren Guidroz pitched a three-hitter with six strikeouts and two walks.

Benton’s Makalyn Lawrence went 2-for-3. 

Benton (8-12, 3-1) is scheduled to play in the Calvary Baptist tournament next. Natchitoches Central improved to 15-3 and 4-0.

At Plain Dealing, Sanaa Lyles had a home run, triple and two RBI in the first game. McKenna Fisk went 2-for-2. Brianna Newton went 2-for-3. Sophie Green pitched a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts and two walks.

Ravin West went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI in the second game. Green went 3-for-3 with a double. Zakira Lewis went 2-for-3. Ryelin West had two RBI.

Plain Dealing improved to 10-1. Homer dropped to 2-5.
