High school softball: Benton tops Airline in 1-5A game; Plain Dealing wins

The Benton Lady Tigers defeated the Airline Lady Vikings 8-2 in a District 1-5A game Thursday at Benton.

In the other 1-5A games, Parkway fell to Captain Shreve 9-3 at Shreve, Natchitoches Central defeated Byrd 12-0 and Evangel Christian defeated Huntington 15-0.

Natchitoches Central (18-4, 6-0) leads the district. Benton (11-13, 4-1) and Haughton (11-11, 4-1) are tied for second followed by Airline (12-7, 3-2), Evangel (8-9, 3-2), Captain Shreve (12-11, 2-3), Parkway (9-9, 1-4) and Byrd (3-12, 1-4).

In a non-district game, Plain Dealing defeated Southwood 16-15 at Plain Dealing.

At Benton, the Lady Tigers took an 8-0 lead with two runs in the first, three in the third, two in the fourth and one in the fifth. Airline got on the board with two in the sixth.

Benton’s Bayleigh Moniz allowed two hits, struck out nine and walked one in six innings.

She also gave the Lady Tigers a 7-0 lead in the fourth with a two-run home run.

Maggie Landman went 2-for-3. Lainey Lafitte had a double. Emma Holmes and KP Tasby had two RBI each.

Airline’s Ainsley Jones had a two-run double in the sixth. 

Benton hosts Byrd Tuesday at 6. Airline plays Jena at 3 and Sterlington at 7 Saturday in the Quitman tournament.

At Plain Dealing, Zakira Lewis and Brianna Newton had three hits each. One of Lewis’ was a double.

Sanaa Lyles went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Emory Young had two RBI.

Plain Dealing (12-3) visits Huntington Monday at 5:30.
