James was born and raised in Norfolk Virginia to parents Hebert and Minnie (Powell) Vanderberry. Sadly, at the age of 3 he lost his dad and so began the family struggle of his mom raising 5 children during the depression. He loved to go to the beach, his paper route and working on the milk truck. He played drums in the high school band where he knew if you play an instrument, you are never alone. He enjoyed Racket Ball, Golf, Baseball, Bowling, Boating, Fishing, Camping, Faithfull workouts at the Gym, Music , Dining out and just puttering in his beloved garage.
His Air Force Military career spanned 30 years form 1948-1978 where he experienced many countries and cities. The most favored posting was in Stephenville, Nf. where he met and married Katrina (Catherine) the love of his life. His cherished title of Chief Master Sergeant came from going the extra mile in his hospital and Administrative career. He also worked as Administrator Willis Knighton Medical Center for 10 years.
He served on the Bossier Parish 911 Board for 14 years, Past Potentate 1989, Established and served as Administrator of Scottish Rite Speech and hearing clinic in Shreveport, helped bag thousands of prescriptions at Barksdale pharmacy until he could no longer physically stand long periods. Proud supporter of Chief Chat. He loved people and talking to them. Most of all he Loved God, Katrina and his Country! He was so proud to be an American.
He is predeceased by his parents and 4 siblings, his loving wife Catherine Vanderberry, Daughter Karol Beth Power (Jerry, Son Richard Justinn (Karen) Grandchildren Mariam Ritzand, Richard Power, Johnathan Justinn, Great Grandchildren Angelica Finlayson, Grayson Ritzand, Amya Ritz and and Abagail Justinn. Recently Great Great Granddaughter Dolly Pearl Preston.
My dad was a humble man that loved helping others and do his part. These past months I have seen him struggle losing his independence but his love and trust for me became evident as I helped with their daily affairs.
Dad, I loved our daily coffee chats inside or outside and this will be my most cherished memories of my time spent with you. I know you felt Loved and Cherished in your most vulnerable time. There is no Greater Love.
I say only Farewell Dad until we meet again. I know you are happily with your Katrina and in the arms of Jesus. Save a seat for us at your table.
You ran the Race, Fought the Good Fight and Won the Battle.
Might I add you did it your way!
Please join us in a Celebration James and a well lived life!
