High school baseball: Benton runs record to 8-0

The Benton Tigers ran their record to 8-0 with two victories Friday in the Ponchatoula tournament.

Benton defeated Archbishop Rummel 4-2 and Ponchatoula 8-3.

Elsewhere, Haughton fell to Sterlington 15-12 in the second of their three-game series at Haughton, and Airline dropped a 2-0 decision to Central of Baton Rouge in the Trey Altick Invitational hosted by Ouachita Christian.

At the Ponchatoula tournament, Benton’s Slade Stephens pitched a complete game against Rummel. He allowed four hits, struck out three and walked one. Stephens did not allow a run after the first inning.

Cole Snell went 2-for-2 with an RBI-double. Harrison Miller hit a two-run home run in the Tigers’ three-run first inning.

Case Jorden went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI against Ponchatoula. Snell went 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI. Hayden Millen went 2-for-4. Bud Burns had two RBI.

Starter Lucas Cox allowed one hit, struck out three and walked two in three innings. Nathan Sprankle allowed two hits, struck out two and walked two in two innings of relief. Rydon McCormack sat down the final four Ponchatoula batters in order.

Benton (7-0) and Rummel (3-3) face off again Saturday at 11 a.m.

At Haughton, the Bucs scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first for a 10-1 lead. But Sterlington scored one in the second and seven in the third to get within one.

Haughton added two in the fourth. The Panthers answered with four in the top of the fifth to take the lead then tacked on two more in the seventh.

Haughton’s Russ Barrett went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Drake Cooper had a double. Seth Jorstad had three RBI.

The Bucs drew 14 walks with five of those coming in the first. Jorstad, Maddox Williams and Barrett had consecutive singles in the inning.

Haughton (5-3) and Sterlington (5-1) are scheduled to complete the series Saturday at 1 at Sterlington.

At the Ouachita Christian tournament, Airline got a stellar performance from starting pitcher Silas Endris. He allowed four hits and one earned run in six innings. Central’s Peyton Walls pitched a two-hitter.

Airline (2-5) faces Prairieville at 1 and Rayne at 5 Saturday in the tournament.
