High school baseball: Benton, Airline complete sweep of 1-5A opponents

The Benton Tigers and Airline Vikings completed District 1-5A sweeps Saturday afternoon.

Benton defeated Parkway 20-6 in six innings at Parkway, and Airline downed Captain Shreve 5-2 at Airline.

In another 1-5A game, Byrd defeated Evangel Christian 8-6.

Benton (15-2-2, 4-0) continues to lead the district. Airline (9-9, 4-1) and Natchitoches Central (15-5, 4-1) are one game back in the loss column.

They are followed by Captain Shreve (13-6, 3-2), Haughton (11-8, 2-2), Evangel Christian (11-6, 3-3), Byrd (4-13, 1-5) and Parkway (5-11, 0-4).

At Parkway, Benton scored nine runs with two outs in the top of the first. The Tigers had seven hits in the frame.

Parkway tried to stay in it, scoring four in the bottom of the first and one in the fourth. But the Tigers scored four in the fifth and seven in the sixth.

Benton’s Harrison Miler went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Brandon McCarthy went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Kannon Greer went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Hayden Millen went 2-for-4 with two RBi. Bud Burns went 2-for-4. Cole Snell had two hits. Brody Turnipseed had four RBI. He and Jake Hutchison both drew two walks.

Garrett Clute allowed five hits, struck out five and walked one in 4 2/3 innings of relief. He allowed only one earned run.

Parkway’s Tristan Sedberry went 3-for-3 with three RBi. Colby Donaldson went 2-for-3. Jax Thomson went 2-for-4. Peyton Rayner had a double.

Benton begins a two-game series Tuesday against Captain Shreve at home at 6.

Parkway visits Converse Monday the begins a two-game series against Haughton Tuesday at 6 at Haughton.

At Airline, the Vikings took the lead for good at 3-1 with two runs in the bottom of the third. Shreve got within one with a run in the fifth, but Airline answered with two in the bottom of the inning.

Ayden Hawn had an outstanding performance on the mound. He allowed two hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts and two walks in five innings. Drew Robinson pitched two scoreless innings for the save.

Seven Vikings had one hit apiece.

Drake Bellew and Bo Carter led off the second with back-to-back singles. The Gators turned a double play but Bellew scored to tie the game at 1.

Airline took advantage of a couple of errors, singles by Robinson and Brock Jordan and a sacrifice fly by Bellew to go up 3-1 in the third. 

Austin Smith led off the fifth with a single. He stole second then advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Bellew was hit by a pitch and Smith scored on a balk. Hawn, running for Bellew, advanced to second on the balk and third on a sacrifice bunt by Carter. He scored on an error with two outs.

Airline begins a two-game series at Natchitoches Central Tuesday at 5.
