High school softball: Haughton gets tournament win; Airline’s Smith shines

The Haughton Lady Bucs picked up one win in the Quitman tournament Saturday.

Haughton defeated Caldwell Parish 8-7. The Lady Bucs also fell to Hahnville 6-3

Also in the tournament, Airline dropped a 2-0 decision to Jena and lost to Sterlington 5-1.

Parkway fell to Zachary 15-2 and Avoyelles Public Charter 11-7 in the West Feliciana tournament.

At the Quitman tournament, Airline’s game against Jena was a pitchers’ duel.

Airline’s Taylor Smith allowed one hit, struck out 15 and walked three in six innings. Jena’s Kiette Cooper, a McNeese signee, came close to pitching a perfect game. She settled for a no-hitter with 15 strikeouts and one walk.

Errors helped the Lady Giants (18-3) score their two runs in the fourth.

Smith went 2-for-3 against Sterlington (10-4). Airline (12-9) hosts Evangel Christian Tuesday at 6.

Haughton’s Charlee Prothro went 2-for-4 against Hahnville. Presley Yerby, Avery Smith and Clara Shaffer had one double apiece.

Hahnville improved to 16-9.

Skylar Hogan went 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI against Caldwell Parish. Smith went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Brooklyn Ezernack went 3-for-4 with a double. Shaffer had a double.

Haughton (12-13) hosts Lakeside Monday at 5:30. Caldwell Parish dropped to 9-17.

At the West Feliciana tournament, Parkway’s Izzy Rodriguez went 3-for-3 with a double against Zachary. Katie Giovengo went 2-for-3 with a double. 

Zachary improved to 11-11.

Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI against Avoyelles Charter. Giovengo went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Madison Menard had two RBI.

Parkway dropped to 9-11. Avoyelles Charter improved to 10-13.
