A final-round charge by former Calvary Baptist and LSU star Sam Burns came up just short in the U.S.Open Sunday in Tuckahoe, N.Y.
Burns entered the day seven strokes behind leader Wyndham Clark. He shot a 3-under par 67 and finished 3 under for the tournament.
Clark shot a 3-over 73. A birdie on the par-5 16th gave him a two-stroke lead over Burns. He bogeyed No. 17 but parred No. 18. That was good enough for a one-stroke wire-to-wire victory.
The runner-up finish was the 29-year-old Burns’ best in a major. The five-time PGA Tour winner finished tied for seventh in the 2025 U.S. Open and this year’s Masters.
Burns quickly made up ground on Clark Sunday, birdieing three of his first five holes and four of his first nine. Clark bogeyed three of his first seven.
Burns bogeyed No. 9 and made the turn at 3 under for the tournament, one stroke behind Clark. Clark birdied No. 10 to extend his lead to two strokes.
Burns missed a short putt for par on No. 15. But he birdied No. 16 and parred No. 17. On the final hole, he barely missed a long putt for birdie and a tie.
Last year at Oakmont, Burns led the U.S. Open after the second and third rounds. But he shot an 8 over in the final round and finished tied for seventh.
