The Haughton Bucs routed the Southwood Cowboys 50-0 Friday night at Prescott Field.
The outcome and margin of victory wasn’t a surprise against a program that has struggled for a long time.
Haughton improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2023. The Bucs also recorded their first shutout in 47 games, a 35-0 victory over Red River in the 2022 season opener.
Haughton has also equaled its win total of last season.
The Bucs went into the game a heavy favorite then took the field and proved why.
“We played well,” Haughton Head Coach Matthew Sewell said. “We had some spots where we had lulls for a little bit, but for the most part we played very well and took care of the football and scored when we had it on offense and got stops on on defense. So overall I was very pleased with with how we played really in all three phases.”
Sewell praised the defense and cited linebacker Luke Hensley, grandson of former Haughton coach Dude Hensley, for his effort.
“We played great upfront all night,” he said. “Especially I thought Luke Hensley had an awesome game. He was all over the place. He played awesome tonight. He had multiple tackles for loss. I think he had a sack or two and he just kind of lived in the backfield all night.”
Defensive back Kyron Turner, a Cincinnati commit, forced a pair of fumbles.
“I just thought we flew around on defense and played very well,” Sewell said.
Haughton rolled up 405 yards total offense. The Bucs averaged 9.64 yards per play.
Taylor Westhersby completed 12-of-19 passes for 126 yards and four touchdowns in limited action because of the rout. He also ran 34 yards for a TD.
Brandon Craig rushed for 144 yards on 11 carries, an average of 13.09 per attempt, and scored two touchdowns. Nolan Simmons had 45 yards on eight carries and a touchdown.
Case Corkern caught two short touchdown passes. Ethan Johnson had five receptions for 59 yards and a TD. Donald Marshall had a 13-yard touchdown catch. Jax Lowrey caught a 34-yard pass.
Haughton plays its third straight home game Friday against Glenbrook. The Apaches (0-2) lost to Bossier 34-7 Thursday night.
