Bossier City Police Urge Caution as Students Return to School

With the new school year now underway, the Bossier City Police Department is reminding motorists to prioritize safety in and around school zones.

As thousands of students return to classrooms across the city, police are emphasizing the importance of driving with heightened awareness—especially during school zone hours and peak drop-off and pick-up times.

Drivers are strongly urged to slow down, obey posted speed limits, and remain vigilant for children walking, biking, or crossing the street, as well as for school buses making frequent stops.

Key safety guidelines include:

  • Slow Down: School zone speed limits are in effect from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on school days.
  • Be Alert: Watch for children, crossing guards, and school staff during busy times near schools.
  • No Cell Phones: Louisiana law bans the use of handheld devices while driving. Distracted driving significantly increases the risk of accidents.
  • Stop for Buses: When a school bus has flashing red lights and its stop arm extended, all vehicles must stop at least 30 feet away in both directions, unless separated by a median.
  • Obey Crossing Guards: Always follow the instructions of crossing guards, who play a key role in ensuring safe pedestrian movement.

Law enforcement officials say officers will be patrolling school zones and issuing citations to violators in an effort to keep children safe as the academic year begins.

The Bossier City Police Department encourages all drivers to plan ahead, leave early if traveling near schools, and stay patient during school traffic.
