Louisiana Secretary of State Nancy Landry today applauded Governor Jeff Landry and the Louisiana Legislature for approving and signing a package of election integrity and security measures designed to strengthen voter confidence, enhance election safeguards, and further secure Louisiana’s election process.
The bills, part of the Secretary of State’s election integrity and security package, include Senate Bill 319 by Sen. Thomas Pressly, House Bill 691 by Rep. Beau Beaullieu, and House Bill 547 by Rep. Polly Thomas, each designed to strengthen voter verification, improve voter roll accuracy, and protect sensitive voter information.
“Louisiana has become a national leader in election integrity because we are committed to continuously improving our election system,” said Secretary Landry. “These reforms reflect a commonsense approach to election administration. They help ensure that voter identities are verified, voter registration rolls remain accurate, and personal voter information is protected.”
Senate Bill 319 by Sen. Thomas Pressly, or Act 5 of the 2026 Louisiana Legislature, establishes clear and uniform standards for voter identification at polling places. The law eliminates ambiguity regarding acceptable forms of identification and provides consistent statewide guidelines for election officials while maintaining multiple pathways for eligible voters to verify their identity and cast a ballot. The law goes into effect July 1, 2027, providing time for implementation and training.
The passage and signing of the bill drew praise from election integrity advocates.
Jason Snead, Executive Director of Honest Elections Project Action, said, “For too long, Louisiana has allowed people to vote merely by signing an affidavit, without showing any form of ID at all. SB 319 will bring that practice to an end, requiring all voters to provide identification before their ballots are counted. Congratulations to Secretary of State Nancy Landry and Louisiana lawmakers for leading the charge to strengthen voter ID in Louisiana.”
Dr. Kevin Roberts, President of Washington, D.C.-based Heritage Action, said, “Governor Landry’s signing of SB 319 delivered a major win for election integrity in my home state of Louisiana. We thank Louisiana State Sen. Thomas Pressly and Secretary of State Nancy Landry for their leadership on SB 319 to ensure that every voter’s identity is verified before their ballot is counted. Few issues are more straightforward than this—our elections should be secure.”
House Bill 691 by Rep. Beau Beaullieu, now known as Act 6 of the 2026 Louisiana Legislature, codifies Louisiana’s use of the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program. The law requires an annual review of voter registration records to identify potential noncitizens registered to vote while preserving due process protections before any voter registration may be canceled. Louisiana was the first state in the nation to use the SAVE system for this purpose and has already used it to improve the accuracy of the state’s voter registration rolls. The law goes into effect on Aug. 1, 2026.
House Bill 547 by Rep. Polly Thomas, or Act 163 of the 2026 Louisiana Legislature, strengthens protections for voter privacy by prohibiting the photographing, recording, or reproduction of sensitive voter registration information contained in Election Day precinct registers. The measure helps safeguard personal voter information and reduces the potential for harassment, intimidation, or misuse of voter data.
Secretary Landry thanked the bill authors and members of the Louisiana Legislature for their partnership in advancing election security measures.
“I appreciate Sen. Thomas Pressly, Rep. Beau Beaullieu, Rep. Polly Thomas, and the members of the Legislature for their commitment to protecting the integrity of Louisiana’s elections,” Secretary Landry said. “Louisiana has made tremendous progress in strengthening election integrity, moving from ninth to fourth in the nation in just two years. These reforms build on that success and continue our commitment to ensuring that every eligible voter can cast a ballot, every legal vote is counted, and every voter can have confidence in the outcome of our elections.”
