Heavy rainfall is creating dangerous driving conditions across the Shreveport-Bossier area as water continues to accumulate on roadways, leaving some vehicles stranded and prompting officials to urge residents to stay off the roads.
Flooding is being reported in several neighborhoods and low-lying areas throughout the region, where streets have become covered with standing water. Motorists are encountering flooded intersections, reduced visibility and rapidly changing conditions as rain continues to fall.
Several vehicles have already become stuck after attempting to drive through high water, forcing drivers to abandon their vehicles or wait for assistance. Emergency responders are monitoring conditions and responding to weather-related calls as needed.
Drivers who must travel are urged to use extreme caution and never attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Even a small amount of water can cause a vehicle to lose control, while deeper water can stall engines or sweep vehicles from the roadway.
The National Weather Service’s message remains clear: “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
Floodwaters can hide dangerous hazards including washed-out pavement, open drainage ditches, debris and strong currents beneath the surface. What appears to be a passable roadway may be far more dangerous than it looks.
Residents living in flood-prone areas are encouraged to remain alert and closely monitor local weather forecasts and emergency notifications. Additional rainfall could lead to worsening conditions in some locations.
As the rain continues, public safety officials are emphasizing one simple message: if you do not have to be on the roads, stay home.
Emergency crews will continue monitoring conditions throughout Shreveport and Bossier City as the weather system moves through the area.
