High school boys golf: Benton’s Toms ties for third in Division I tournament; Tigers finish fourth, three strokes behind champion Byrd

Benton’s Cason Toms finished tied for third in the Ochsner LHSAA Division I Boys’ State Tournament Wednesday in Lafayette.

Benton finished fourth in the team competition, just three strokes behind winner Byrd and one behind runners-up St. Paul’s and Catholic-Baton Rouge.

Benton shot an 3-under 285 on The Wetlands course for a two-day total of even-par 576.

Byrd and Catholic shot 284. St. Paul’s shot 286.

Toms shot a 4-under 68 for a two-day total of 6-under 138. Brother Martin’s Kyle Traub, who led the first round with a 65, shot a 70 for a 135. He won by two strokes over Jesuit’s Duke Nitcher.

Benton’s Miller Davis finished tied for fifth. He shot a 69 and for a two-day total of 4-under 140.

Benton’s Kade Bryant and Airline’s Madden Sawrie finished tied for 13th at 145. Both shot 73 in the second round.

Benton’s Colton Halverson shot a 75, three strokes lower than his first-round score. Benton’s Austin Race shot an 82.
