High school track and field: Benton sweeps team titles in Haughton meet

Benton swept the team titles in the Haughton Bob Brotherton Invitational Thursday. 

Both divisions were extremely close.

Benton won the boys division by less than a point. The Tigers scored 101 points. West  Monroe was second with 100.33. Airline was third with 95 and Parkway fourth with 87.

Benton scored 105 points in the girls division. Airline was second with 100, North DeSoto third with 89 and Parkway fourth with 76.

The meet was the final tune-up for teams before next week’s district meets.

Boys

Haughton’s Kyron Turner was a triple winner.

He won the 100 in 11.05 seconds and the 200 in 22.27. Parkway’s Jadarrian Clark was second in the 100 in 11.16. Turner’s teammate Ja’lon Abney was second in the 200 in 22.47.

Turner and Benton’s Jordan Johnson both cleared an impressive height of 6 feet, 8 inches in the high jump. Turner was first on fewer misses. The wining jump in last year’s 5A state meet was 6-9.5.

Airline’s Lathan Woodland took the 400 in 49.13. West Monroe’s Remy Moore was second in 50.12.

Bossier’s Quinton Hodge captured the 800 in 1:55.87. Parkway’s Brennan Robin was second in 1:56.19. The winning time in the 4A state meet was 1:55.52.

Airline’s John Austin Bonney won the 1,600 in 4:43.68. Parkway’s Noah Lafitte was second in 4:44.43.

Parkway’s Aiden O’Nishea and Isaac Ruliffson finished 1-2 in the 3,200. O’Nishea ran a 10:00.06 and Ruliffson a 10:31.25.

The 110 hurdles featured two of the best in the area. LSU football signee Isaiah Washington won in 14.83. Airline’s Preston Hughes was second in 15.25.

Haughton’s Jamarion Gray edged Washington by three-hundredths of a second in the 300 hurdles, one of the meet’s best races. Gray ran a 40.81 and Washington a 40.84.

The triple jump featured impressive performances by Washington and Woodland. Washington won with a 45-8, 6 inches farther than Woodland’s best attempt.

Benton’s Cade Austin continued his outstanding season in the pole vault. He cleared 14 feet. North DeSoto’s Sage Stoute was second with a 12-6. The winning height in last year’s state meet was 13-11.3.

Benton’s Ryder Dodson took the discus with a throw of 162-2. West Monroe’s Marcus Thomas was second with a 153-4.

Benton’s Malachi Zeigler captured the javelin with a throw of 176-10, 38 feet farther than the best attempt by runner-up Jordan Kemp of North DeSoto.

Airline’s Joseph Thrash won the shot put with a throw of 44-3. Kemp was second with a 40-7.

Parkway won the 4X800 relay in an impressive 7:55.41. The winning time in last year’s 5A meet was 7:58.92. Airline was second with a 8:54.79.

West Monroe won the 4X100, 4X200 and 4X400 relays.

The Rebels ran a 42.30 in the 4X100, edging Haughton by one-hundredth of a second.

Airline was second in the 4X400 in 3:24.13. West Monroe’s time was 3:19.29.

Third-place finishers from parish schools in individual events were Airline’s Braylon Bryant (100), Parkway’s Javaria Flournoy (800), Parkway’s Pierce Dees (1,600), Benton’s Colin Nelson (110 hurdles), Benton’s Kameron Fuller (high jump), Benton’s Gavin Ellison (long jump), Haughton’s Gray (triple jump), Airline’s Maxwell Moore (discus), Benton’s Jack Jayroe (javelin) and Benton’s Zeigler (shot put).

Girls 

Bossier’s Kaylyn Godfrey won the 100 in 12.29. North DeSoto’s was second in 12.37.

Parkway’s Zara Baker-Scanlon and Destinee Lacour finished 1-2 in a close finish in the 400. Baker-Scanlon ran a 1:00.56 and Lacour a 1:00.74.

Airline’s Sarah-Catherine Tauzin took the 800 in 2:34.21. Parkway’s Sofia Bright was second in 2:35.09.

Benton’s Claire Allen captured the 3,200 in 12:27.49. Parkway’s Caylee Weaver was second in 13:19.09.

Bossier’s Zamarion Carter won the 300 hurdles in 48.96. West Monroe’s Kennedy Gilbert was second in 49.50.

Airline won the 4X100 relay in 50.59, the 4X200 in 1:44.51 and the 4X400 in 4:13.30. Benton was second in the 4X100 in 51.45 and 4X200 in 1:46.68. Bossier finished second in the 4X400 in 4:20.67.

Parkway won the 4X800 in 10:37.46. Airline was second in 11:02.32.

Airline’s Shelby Ledet won the high jump with a 5-6. The winning jump in last year’s 5A meet was 5-7.7. North Webster’s Kipper Wooten was second with a 4-10.

Benton’s Ryleigh McCoy and Isabella Joyner both cleared 9-0 in the pole vault. McCoy was first on fewer misses.

Parkway’s Zaniyah Carter took the discus with a 122-10. North DeSoto’s Josie Parker was second with a 98-8.

Benton’s Tenley Hesson won the javelin with a 95-11. Parkway’s Lecsi Hilton was second with an 88-0.

Bossier’s Tre’onna Thomas and Plain Dealing’s Breanna Newton finished 1-2 in the shot put. Thomas’ distance was 37-9, 5 inches farther than Newton’s best attempt.

Other runner-up finishers from parish schools in individual events were Airline’s Leah Menard (200, 25.98), Benton’s Aaliyah Gonzalez (1,600, 6:02.20), Bossier’s J’Diya Morris (100 hurdles, 16.83) and Benton’s Layla Davidson (triple jump, 33-8).

Third-place finishers were Airline’s Symauri Butler (200), Airline’s Kaylyn Thompson (800), Benton’s Ellie Allen (1,600), Haughton’s Clara Hicks (3,200), Haughton’s Isabella Van (high jump), Bossier’s Carter (triple jump) and Airline’s Kaylyn Thompson (pole vault),
