High school wrestling: Airline’s Parker claims state title; nine other parish wrestlers make awards stand

Airline senior Ty Parker won the Division I 175-pound class in the Ochsner LHSAA Wrestling State Tournament held last Friday and Saturday at the Brookshire Grocery Arena.

Parker was the only champion from a parish school, but nine others made the awards stand by finishing in the top six.

Benton junior Cooper Reagan finished runner-up in the Division I 165-pound class. Airline junior Danon Walker was third in the 215-pound class.

Airline senior Logan Olsen finished fifth in the 113-pound class.

Benton junior Jack McGuire (132) and Luke Campbell (175) were sixth in their respective weight classes.

Four Parkway wrestlers made it in Division II — junior Larry Davis (157, 4th), sophomore Dylan Mesloh (190, 5th) junior Ethan Plunkett (215, 5th) and junior Joshua Tell (144, 6th).

Parker won three matches by fall to reach the semifinals. He pinned Benton’s Campbell, who also won three, in 3:05 to reach the championship match against William Mathis of Dutchtown.

Parker had two takedowns in the first period to take a 4-2 lead. He scored three more in the second on an escape and takedown and led 7-3 going into the third.

Mathis scored a quick point on an escape at the beginning of the third. He closed the gap to 7-6 on a takedown with 53 seconds left.

Parker added a point on an escape with 33 seconds left and went on to win the title 8-6.

Reagan pinned his first two opponents then won a major decision to reach the quarterfinals where he defeated Arthur Schott of Jesuit 3-1.

He was pinned by Rory Horvath of Brother Martin in 1:28 in the title match.

Walker won three matches, two by fall, to reach the semifinals where he lost to Samuel Eucede-Torre 14-5.

Walker won his first consolation match then defeated Kohen Johnson of Holy Cross 10-4 in the third-place match.

Davis won three matches to reach the semifinals where lost a tough 10-8 decision to Chase Smart of North DeSoto.

Davis won one consolation match then fell to Peyton Miller of Sam Houston in the third-place match.

Olsen won two matches to reach the semifinals before losing to eventual champion Anthony Oubre of Holy Cross 9-2.

He lost a tough 3-2 decision in his first consolation match then pinned Rhett Nastasi of St. Paul in 1:53 in the fifth-place match.

Mesloh pinned his first two opponents then lost to Caden Robinson of North DeSoto by fall in 2:00 in the semifinals. He lost his first consolation match then defeated Taylor Mahoney of Riverdale 14-5 in the fifth-place match.

Plunkett lost in the first round then won four matches in consolation before falling. He pinned Antonio Caldera of Archbishop Rummel in 1:53 in the fifth-place match.

McGuire and Tell reached the quarterfinals and won two consolation matches.

Benton and Airline finished 10th and 11th, respectively, in Division I. The Tigers scored 101 points and Airline 91.5.

New Orleans Jesuit won with 321. Holy Cross was runner-up with 275.5.

Parkway finished seventh in Division II with 119 points. North DeSoto won with 326. Teurlings Catholic was second with 297.
