Customers, friends and community supporters gathered last week to celebrate a major milestone for Sunshine Health Foods as the locally owned business marked its 50th anniversary.

The weeklong celebration honored five decades of serving the Bossier-Shreveport community and featured product demonstrations, giveaways, raffles, special discounts and charitable giving.

Founded in May 1976 by Jean Bernheim, Sunshine Health Foods opened its first location on Line Avenue in Shreveport during a time when health food stores were far less common than they are today. The business later expanded into Bossier City after Bernheim and her husband, Gus, recognized a need for a health food store on the east side of the Red River.

According to current owner Sheila Hamaker, the opportunity to establish a Bossier location came when longtime customers Wanda and Wade Pope informed the family about available space in Pope’s Plaza.

Over the past five decades, Sunshine Health Foods has evolved alongside growing interest in nutrition, wellness and healthy living. Hamaker said one of the biggest changes has been the dramatic increase in products available within the natural foods industry and greater consumer awareness about the role nutrition plays in overall health.

“The needs and interests continue to grow as people make changes in their diets and lifestyles and take their health into their own hands,” Hamaker said.

The anniversary celebration also highlighted the store’s longstanding commitment to the community. During the week, Sunshine Health Foods recognized local vendors whose products are featured in the store and hosted a day dedicated to charitable giving. Twenty percent of one day’s sales was donated to the Gingerbread House, a nonprofit organization serving children and families in the area.

The celebration concluded Saturday with a birthday party featuring sandwiches, chips, drinks and cake for customers. Shoppers also received special anniversary promotions, including the opportunity to purchase one item at 50% off.

The store’s influence extends beyond its loyal customer base and has become a trusted resource for local health professionals as well.

“Sunshine Health is an amazing staple in Bossier,” said Shelly Marie Redmond, a registered dietitian serving clients throughout the area. “As a dietitian, I love to send my Bossier and Minden clients over to Sunshine for specialty food items that they can purchase right in their neighborhood.”

Hamaker said community support like that has helped Sunshine Health Foods remain successful for five decades. She noted that the relationships built with customers, healthcare professionals and local vendors have made the store much more than a retail business.

“We feel that the Bossier community is an extension of our family,” she said. “We have developed so many friendships during our time in Bossier, and the support has been wonderful.”

As Sunshine Health Foods begins its next chapter, Hamaker expressed gratitude to the generations of customers who have supported the business since its founding.

For 50 years, the store has remained a trusted resource for health-conscious consumers throughout the region, and its owners say they look forward to continuing that tradition for years to come.
