High school football: (Updated) Haughton, Airline players shine in losses to 1-5A foes

The Haughton Bucs fell to the Natchitoches Central Chiefs 42-32 Friday night at Turpin Stadium in Natchitoches.

The Bucs dropped to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in district. Natchitoches Central, which snapped a three-game losing streak, improved to 2-3 and 1-3.

Haughton had an opportunity to pick up its second win, but a big fourth quarter propelled Natchitoches Central to the victory.

Haughton rolled up 517 yards total offense.

Taylor Weathersby had a huge night, completing 22-of-31 passes for 403 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. He also rushed for 38 yards on five carries.

Ethan Johnson and Brandon Craig continued their outstanding seasons. Johnson caught 13 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns.

Craig had 135 yards receiving on just five catches. Two of those went for touchdowns. He also rushed for 76 yards on 20 carries and a touchdown.

Case Corkern had three catches for 47 yards. DeCarlos Johns had two for 37.

Haughton hosts Benton Thursday. The Tigers (1-4, 0-3) defeated Leesville 42-35 Thursday night.

Captain Shreve 66, Airline 56: The Vikings’ chances for a repeat District 1-5A championship took a hit with the loss at M.D. Ray Field at Airline Stadium.

Airline dropped to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in district. Captain Shreve improved to 4-1 with its fourth straight win and 4-0.

The Gators share the district lead with Parkway and Evangel Christian.

The Vikings jumped out to a 20-3 lead but the Gators rallied to within 20-17 at halftime.

The second half was a track meet with both teams going up and down the field.

Airline led 34-24 but the Gators scored 21 straight points to go up 45-34. The Vikings kept cutting into the lead after that but simply couldn’t stop Shreve’s big plays.

In the second half, the Gators’ scoring plays covered 78, 74, 50, 83, 21, 63 and 73 yards.

Shreve All-State running back Jamarcea Plater rushed for 208 yards and four touchdowns. He became the school’s all-time leading rusher. Plater also had 113 yards receiving.

Quarterback Jackson Gaskin completed 15-of-17 passes for 406 yards and four TDs.

Airline quarterback Chase Williams completed 28-of-40 passes for 405 yards and three touchdowns.

DJ Allen rushed for 187 yards on 18 carries and four touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass.

All-State receiver Kenny Darby had 14 catches for 164 yards and a touchdown. He also rushed for 75 yards on eight carries and a TD.

Terrence Hays had three catches for 99 yards. Preston Hughes caught a 62-yard pass for a TD.

Airline visits Parkway Thursday. The Panthers (5-0, 3-0) defeated Byrd 52-24 Friday night.
