A freight train derailed late Thursday after colliding with an 18-wheeler carrying saltwater at the Smith Road railroad crossing on Highway 71 near Elm Grove in south Bossier Parish.
According to the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Louisiana State Police, multiple rail cars derailed in the area.
One fatality is being reported as a result of the incident.
Highway 71 is closed between Highway 154 and Highway 527.
Motorists are urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes until further notice.
Officials continue to work at the scene. Drivers should expect significant delays and allow extra time for alternate routes. It is being reported that the roadway may not reopen until late Friday.
