Republican U.S. Rep. Julia Letlow defeated former U.S. Rep. John Fleming in the Saturday, June 27, runoff election to win the Republican nomination for Louisiana’s U.S. Senate seat, earning 57% of the vote to Fleming’s 43%.
The victory sends Letlow to the Nov. 3 general election, where she will face Democrat Jamie Davis, who won Saturday’s Democratic runoff. The winner in November will succeed Sen. Bill Cassidy.
The runoff followed a competitive primary on May 16 in which no Republican candidate secured the majority needed to avoid a second election. On May 16, Letlow finished first with 45% of the vote, followed by Fleming with 28%. Cassidy finished third with 25%, eliminating the incumbent from contention.
Throughout the campaign, both Letlow and Fleming traveled the state highlighting their conservative credentials while outlining differing visions for Louisiana’s future in Washington.
Letlow, who has represented Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District in the U.S. House since 2021, centered her campaign on economic growth, support for the energy industry, border security and advocacy for Louisiana’s agricultural communities.
Fleming, who represented Louisiana in the U.S. House from 2009 to 2017 and has served as Louisiana state treasurer since 2024, campaigned on reducing federal spending, limiting government regulation and promoting conservative fiscal policies.
Unofficial election returns showed Letlow receiving 57% of the statewide vote, while Fleming earned 43%.
If elected in November, Letlow would become one of Louisiana’s two U.S. senators when the new Congress convenes.
In Bossier Parish, Letlow and Fleming tied with 4,351 votes each (50%).
Also in Bossier Parish, three tax propositions were on Saturday’s ballot:
