What began as a simple act of kindness by David “Andy” and Shannon Gray in 2020 has grown into one of Haughton’s most beloved holiday traditions. Now in its fifth year, Santa’s Helpers of Haughton continues to brighten the Christmas season for families facing hardship — reaching more children in 2024 than ever before.

The Grays launched the initiative after deciding to scale back gift-giving within their own family and instead focus on helping others. Their mission became even more urgent when a neighbor’s home was destroyed by fire just weeks before Christmas. Determined to make a difference, David Gray connected with Stacey Adams and Jessie Ford — two community members already known for assisting local families in need.

“This whole thing started with a dream to be able to help those in need,” said Ford, one of the organization’s founding members. “Since this dream has become a reality, we are always brought to tears by the outpouring of love and compassion we see.”

In its first year, Santa’s Helpers assisted 18 families and 34 children, providing both gifts and Christmas dinners with help from Deana Reynolds, owner of Reynolds Grocery. The project quickly gained momentum. By its third season, the program was supporting 88 children, propelled by word of mouth, social media outreach and the growing involvement of local donors and volunteers.

The organization continued to expand. In 2024, Santa’s Helpers served 40 families and 84 children, and volunteers say the need is still rising. Heading into the 2025 holiday season, organizers estimated they would assist around 100 children — but now believe they will surpass that number.

Another milestone this year is the establishment of 19 drop-box locations throughout Haughton, the largest number the program has ever had, making it easier than ever for residents to donate toys, clothing and essentials.

For the volunteers, the effort is about far more than gifts.

“At the end of the day, our community shows what it takes to be a positive and uplifting place to live,” Ford said. “When we come together, a small plan can make a huge impact.”

Families seeking assistance can apply through a form on the Santa’s Helpers of Haughton Facebook page. Once approved, families are “adopted” by generous community members who shop to fulfill each child’s holiday wish list.

As Santa’s Helpers of Haughton enters its fifth season, the organization stands as a shining example of how compassion and collaboration can transform a simple idea into a powerful community movement — one child, one family and one Christmas at a time.
