Last week, what started as a routine ride home on bus #197 turned into a potentially tragic situation for Curtis Elementary student Magnus Unufe. Thanks to the quick thinking and heroic actions of bus operator Deborah Johnson, however, a frightening incident was averted.

When Magnus began choking on a piece of candy during the bus ride, Ms. Johnson wasted no time springing into action. Without hesitation, she performed the Heimlich maneuver, successfully dislodging the obstruction from Magnus’s airway. The bus erupted into applause as Magnus exclaimed, “She just saved my life!”

Expressing profound gratitude for Ms. Johnson’s swift response, Magnus’s father remarked, “May God have all the glory!” He extended heartfelt thanks to Ms. Johnson for her decisive actions, which were instrumental in saving his son’s life.

As the community celebrates National School Bus Driver Day today, the incident serves as a poignant reminder of the vital role bus operators play in ensuring the safety and well-being of students. It underscores the dedication and quick thinking demonstrated by individuals like Ms. Johnson, who go above and beyond to ensure the welfare of those entrusted to their care.
