High school baseball: Benton shuts out Byrd; Bossier wins

The Benton Tigers completed a two-game District 1-5A sweep of Byrd with a 12-0 victory Thursday night at the Yellow Jackets’ LSUS field.

Elsewhere in 1-5A, Airline dropped a 2-1 decision to Evangel Christian at Evangel and Haughton fell to Natchitoches Central 9-1 in Natchitoches.

Bossier defeated Huntington 8-7 at home. Providence Classical Academy dropped a doubleheader against Stanley in the Converse tournament by identical 11-0 scores.

At LSUS, Case Jorden had two hits, including a double, and four RBI. Brody Turnipseed went 2-for-2. Bud Burns went 2-for-4. 

Slade Stephens had a double. Hayden Millen had two RBI,

Three Benton pitchers limited Byrd (3-10, 0-2) to four hits. Starter Cole Snell gave up one hit and struck out two in two innings. Bryson Gates allowed one hit and struck out two in two innings. Garrett Clute pitched the final inning.

Benton (12-2-2, 2-0) is scheduled to visit Sterlington Monday at 6.

At Evangel, the Eagles broke a 1-1 tie on a leadoff home run by Nick Lopez in the bottom of the sixth. 

Evangel’s Parker Davis pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and no walks. Airline starter Ayden Hawn allowed four hits and no earned runs in four innings with three strikeouts.

Bo Carter had a double. Brock Jordan and Austin Smith had the Vikings’ other hits. Leo Heng had an RBI.

Airline (6-9, 1-1) and Evangel (9-4, 1-1) split the series. The Vikings won the first game Tuesday 9-8 in 10 innings.

Airline is scheduled to host Huntington Friday at 1.

At Natchitoches Central, the Chiefs (11-4, 2-0) scored eight runs in the first inning on seven hits, including a home run and triple.

Haughton had seven hits. Carson Plant and Drake Cooper both went 2-for-3. CT Woodard hit a home run in the top of the fifth.

Plant pitched four scoreless innings of relief with four strikeouts and no walks. 

Haughton (9-6, 0-2) is scheduled to play the first of a two-game series against Byrd Friday at 6. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday at 1 but it was moved up a day because of the threat of heavy rain and severe weather.

At Rusheon, Bossier (2-7) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally for the victory.

JoJo Rachel went 2-for-5. Brayden Cunningham had two RBI. 

Starter Mike Thomas struck out nine in five innings. Jorge Taylor didn’t allow a hit and struck out three in two innings of relief.

Parkway defeated Homer 16-0 in three innings Wednesday at Parkway. Jax Thomson had a triple and four RBI in the three-inning game. Brylan Washington also had a triple. 

Kirby Haskins, Peyton Rayner and Kingston Meza had one double apiece. Haskins and Tyler Parker had two RBI each.

Carsen Barringer gave up one hit, struck out seven and walked none. 

Parkway is still scheduled to open district play at Captain Shreve Saturday at 1 but that could change with the weather situation.

At the Converse tournament, PCA dropped to 3-6. Stanley improved to 8-4.
