Louisiana residents can now apply for the federal Low-Income Home Energy
Assistance Program, better known as LIHEAP. SWEPCO wants you to know that help is available for
qualifying residents to cover home energy costs. The application window for summer cooling assistance
is open until September 30.

To be eligible for LIHEAP, applicants must meet income requirements, be responsible for their
household’s energy costs, be at risk of disconnection or experience an interruption of service. The
household’s gross income (before taxes) must be at or below 60% of the state’s median income. Income
levels are based on the number of household members.

To apply, you will need:
 A photo ID (for all household members 18 and older)
 Social Security cards (for all household members)
 Current utility bills (within the last 30 days)
 Proof of income (pay stubs for the last 30 days for employed household members and
documentation for unearned income such as Social Security or unemployment)
 Proof of address (if different from ID)
 Section 8/subsidized housing (a Section 8 contract notice and a utility allowance worksheet)

In 2023, nearly 100,000 Louisiana households were served by LIHEAP during the summer. On average,
each household received $474 to help with the summer electric bill.

You can check your eligibility for LIHEAP by visiting SWEPCO.com/billhelp. To apply for LIHEAP, you must
