In an emotional message released Tuesday, Feb. 17, owner Lee Hovis announced that Wonder Oasis Waterpark has ceased operations effective immediately, bringing an abrupt end to efforts to revive the once-beloved community attraction.

In a statement addressed to the Shreveport community, Hovis expressed gratitude to supporters while acknowledging that financial challenges ultimately proved insurmountable.

“When I first took on this project, my intentions were rooted in hope, excitement, and a genuine desire to restore a beloved community destination,” Hovis wrote. “Despite my determination and passion, I must acknowledge that I have exhausted every effort and dollar within my reach. It simply has not been enough.”

Hovis explained that the project began underfinanced, with the expectation that steady attendance and revenue would stabilize operations. However, delays in opening during the 2024 season caused significant financial strain and a loss of critical revenue.

In an attempt to sustain operations, Hovis said he assumed personal debt and secured additional capital from local investors to operate the park during the 2025 season. Early signs in July 2025 offered hope that the park was gaining momentum.

“July started off with promise, and we were hopeful for a strong recovery,” he stated.

But unexpected weather conditions significantly reduced attendance, compounding existing financial pressures. Despite continued efforts and support from employees, investors and the community, Hovis said the situation became unsustainable.

“Throughout this endeavor, I have given everything I had to revive the waterpark — mentally, physically and financially,” he wrote. “Unfortunately, the financial situation is now beyond my ability to continue the business forward.”

The closure marks a disappointing chapter for many Shreveport-area families who had hoped the waterpark would once again become a staple of summer recreation.

In the wake of the announcement, two regional parks have stepped forward to assist displaced passholders. Big Dam Waterpark in Texarkana, Arkansas, and Splash Kingdom Waterparks in Canton and Nacogdoches, Texas, are offering specially discounted season admissions to residents of the Shreveport-Bossier area.

Additionally, both parks have agreed to honor any 2026 Wonder Oasis season passes already purchased. Passholders may redeem their pass at either park, where it will then be valid for that selected location.

Hovis expressed appreciation for the gesture, calling it a reflection of the broader waterpark community’s willingness to support local families during a difficult transition.

“Although this is a sad day for myself and my family, I do want to thank you for allowing me the opportunity to try,” Hovis wrote. “I remain grateful for this community and hope that, in time, new opportunities for joy and recreation will arise for Shreveport area families.”
