The Benton Lady Tigers made school history Monday by advancing to the semifinals of the playoffs with a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over Northshore.

The No. 5 seed Lady Tigers (22-4) will try to make more history Saturday when they face No. 1 Mt. Carmel (20-3-4) in the non-select semifinals at 3 p.m. at Pan American Stadium located in New Orleans’ City Park.

No Bossier Parish girls soccer team has reached a state championship game.

To get there Benton will have to defeat a formidable foe. The Cubs are the defending state champions. They defeated Byrd 2-0 in the finals last year.

Mt. Carmel has won four state championships with the first coming in the 2010-11 season.

The Cubs’ losses this season have been against Clinton, Miss., 2-0, Isidore Newman 2-1 and Archbishop Hannan 3-0. Newman and Archbishop Hannan are both in the semifinals of their respective divisions.

One of the Cubs’ four ties was 1-1 against Northshore early in the season. Sixteen of their 20 wins have been shutouts.

Mt. Carmel defeated No. 32 East Ascension 4-0 in the first round of the playoffs, No. 16 Zachary 4-0 in the second and No. 8 Southside 4-1 in the quarterfinals.

Benton defeated No. 28 Ponchatoula 8-0, No. 12 St. Amant and No. 13 Northshore.

Seventeen of the Lady Tigers’ wins have been shutouts.
