College baseball: BPCC sweeps Panola

The Bossier Parish Community College Cavaliers swept their doubleheader against Panola, winning Game 1, 11-2 and Game 2, 8-7 to improve to 26-17 on the season.

Game 1: 11-2 Win

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Cavs’ offense exploded for 10 runs to blow the game open. BPCC finished with 10 hits, seven of them for extra bases.

Jackson Reifel started and went four innings, allowing one earned run while striking out two. Trent Lape pitched three scoreless innings in relief to earn the win, striking out two and allowing just one base runner.

Fresh off his commitment to Stephen F. Austin, James Reina went 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBI. Bryson Pierce added a 1-for-3 performance with a three-RBI double. Brandon Levy, who recently committed to UNO, went 2-for-4 with a double. Gianluca Montanaro contributed a 2-for-4 effort with a home run and two RBI.

Game 2: 8-7 Win

The Cavs jumped out to a 4-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the first but found themselves trailing 7-6 heading into the bottom of the eighth. Gianluca Montanaro changed the game with a towering home run to dead center field to give BPCC the lead. Chase Randall closed out the ninth to earn his seventh save of the year.

Montanaro went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI. James Reina also delivered a key home run and added two RBI. Reina and Montanaro each had three home runs on the day, combining for six long balls between them.

Brandon Levy kept hitting , going 2-for-3 with two walks. Bryson Pierce went 1-for-2 with three walks.

On the season, Levy is hitting .403 with seven doubles, three triples, and three home runs. Reina is batting .349 with a .520 on-base percentage, nine doubles, nine home runs, and 34 RBI. Montanaro is hitting .350 with seven doubles, a team-leading 10 home runs, and 37 RBI. Pierce is batting .455 with eight doubles and three home runs.

“Those four guys are having incredible seasons,” head coach Bobby Gilliam said. “They all have put us on their back of late and especially today. Levy and Reina have put their time in here and it’s fun to watch them develop into the players they have become and get rewarded by signing D1 scholarships.”

The Cavs will now play a three-game series with Tyler this week, beginning with a single game Wednesday at Tyler and concluding with a doubleheader Saturday at home.
